Mystery Figures

I recently acquired these old 30mm colonial figures, but I have been unable to work out who manufactured them.  I have looked at Scruby, Willie, Tradition and other websites with no luck.

The group consists of highlanders, Sudanese? infantry and some natives:

On the base are the letters CW and a number:

If anyone is able to identify the maker I would be most grateful.

  1. They are Barry Minot sculpts from his colonial war range of 25mm. Quite a large range with many poses (for the time) and several vignettes. Zulu wars and 1898 Sudan. NW frontier planned but never I think released. I don't recognise the figure in the bottom RH corner. I had quite a few but got rid of some years ago. If you decide to let them go the chap who has taken over Jaclex miniatures is a keen collector. I think the range was called genesis and was around for 2-3 years in the mid-late 70's.

    1. Thanks for your very useful and speedy response. I never considered Minot. I have about 50 assorted figures which I plan to use for some colonial actions, having just ordered Bob Cordery's Portable Colonial wargames book. I was going to use Jaclex, but I stumbled across these figures which are really rather nice. On closer inspection the bottom right figure is from another range and I can't make out the markings on the base.

  2. Bob, I seldom manage to successfully leave a comment on your blog as I mostly read it on my phone and Blogger really doesn't like comments via Safari.

So this is my second attempt to write this comment, this time ensconced at my PC. Thank you for these pictures, and John P for the explanation, i have never seen these figures before. I am a big fan of Barry Minot's - particularly of the hard plastic AW! Connoisseur Range he did for Spencer Smith Miniatures. These CW figures (presumably Colonial Wars?) remind me strongly of the effect of the photos of Tradition 25mm figures in the MW Frontier Campaign in Don Featherstone's Solo Wargaming book, which were endlessly inspiring. I went for Jacklex but have 30 or 40 Tradition Colonials I must dust down and paint up sometime - also maybe add to.

I suspect the last figure on the bottom row might be RAFM - certainl;y nothing to do with the Minots.

    1. Sorry in the delay in my response. I almost went for Jaclex, but I spotted these figures and instantly fell in love. Now that I know Stadden, now Tradition, figures work alongside these, I think I made the right choice. I have been going through all my Featherstone booksand have found several pictures of his colonial actions, although I do not have the Solo Wargames book. I found a picture of the Boers in action against the British and colour pictures of the Afghan wars and Indian Mutiny
