More Airfix Romans

I have finished off the last of my Airfix Roman infantry, although I still have a unit of archers to paint. In this instance, I have repositioned the shields to give a more realistic appearance:

I also had a chariot in the box and could not resist painting it, although it will likely be reserved for the Triumph in Rome!  Here is General Ludicrous Sextus urging the troops on!

My Airfix Roman army so far:

  1. Nice one. What method did you end up using to reposition the shields?

    1. I ended up repositioning the arms with boiling water and using glue to hold the shields in place. My next unit will have pinned shields as you suggest.

  2. Great work Bob - I know the chariot shouldn't be there etc etc but I've always liked it and I seem to remember Terry Wise using them so that's good enough for me! Hope you have a little game with them and the Ancient Britons.

    1. That was my thought; the chariot was there and just needed to be painted. I will have a game when the Roman numbers are a little higher.

  3. Definitely the right choice to go with the Airfix figures!

    1. I am not sure that I will be able to source enough figures for a complete army, so I am continuing to paint some metal figures too.

  4. Splendid stuff Bob…
Next thing you know you will be converting the Robin Hood box up to make additional barbarians 😁

    All the best. Aly

    1. Funny you should say that. I have found some Robin Hood and Sheriff of Nottingham figures, but I may just paint them for a mini medieval game.

  5. Thanks Martin. I have now perfected the shield moving and my next batch should be much easier.

  6. Beautifully painted Bob. (Still) wonderful figures and recent work such as that of Rafael D'Amato suggests more accurate than was thought previously (particularly if you consider a good deal of the armour to be leather).

    1. Thanks James. I seem to remember reading an article years ago suggesting that the armour should painted as leather rather than iron. You may well be correct.

  7. Very good looking Romans, Airfix figures can be vert tricky to paint as I have found out but these look great Bob.

    1. Thanks Chris, there is something about Airfix figures that keeps drawing me back and to get out the paint tins.
