I spotted this game for sale at around £16. It is by Plastic Soldier Company and is a strategic game covering the Battle of Britian. :
I am sure many are familiar with this product, but I had not seen it before. It has a rather nice Ops Room style map, some plastic aircraft markers and a load of cards which allow the management of the assets during the three campaign scenarios:
The model planes, which will have to be painted, are made of a rather odd bendy plastic, that I learned had been replaced in later games. I sent off to PSC and was able to buy a bag of hard 100 plastic aircraft for around £10. One of the bendy Spitfires:
I am looking forward to trying the game out.
I received this for Christmas Bob, but I only managed a brief try out of it. It was a bit overwhelming to play solo for me, some the rules seemed vague and the playing pieces were not great.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny I was looking at it yesterday and contemplating getting it onto the table.
I look forward to seeing yours in action.
Regards,
Paul.
Hi Paul, it does look a little complex with seemingly lots of record keeping; however, I have looked at a couple of videos on Youtube and it is starting to make sense. The aircraft in the box are not good, soft and bendy but some boiling water seems to sort that out. I will likely use my 1/600 scale aircraft that are already painted.
DeleteLooks an interesting game , I have looked at it but not bought it yet , I will be interested in how it plays .
ReplyDeleteFor the price it was hard to resist.
DeleteIf you want a good solo game of the BoB, Bob (see what I did there?), try RAF by West End Games. Meanwhile, drop me a line - I’ve sorted out some figures for you!
ReplyDeleteI will take a look at that and will be in touch.
DeleteI’ve had a copy for a couple of years but only tried it once, keep meaning to have a proper go as it looks quite good!
ReplyDeleteI might end up setting it all up then putting it away! I do that when a game does not grab my attention.
DeleteWorking on the (faultless) theory that anything with a picture of a Spitfire on it must be good I look forward to your review.
ReplyDeleteTrouble is inside there is a lime green bendy Spitfire! I will try out the first scenario and see how it goes.
DeleteI'm pleased to see that the board features North Weald. I worked there for ten years in Ops until I retired. I have spent a fair bit of time over the years helping to push the Hangar 11 Collection's Hurricane in and out of the hangar. A Hurricane is bigger and heavier than the Spitfire (which also got moved around a fair bit as well!). I was also lucky enough to meet various veterans including Tom Neil who flew Hurricanes with 249 Squadron from NW during the Battle of Britain – the Gate Guardian represents his aircraft.
ReplyDeletePity about the 'bendy' Spitfires, they should really be Hurricanes!
The later version of models are much improved.
DeleteI had the original game when it came out over 30 years ago now, and enjoyed it then. I have purchased this reissued version, and had the plane models replaced with their hard plastic "Mk II" set, which are a vast improvement! They do paint up nicely, my only complaint being the rather silly stickers provided in lieu of decals for the national markings.
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any markings for my planes. I agree about the poor quality body plans, but I bought a bag of 100 of the hard plastic type for £10, although I have not painted any as yet.
