Minifigs S Range Bavarian Artillery

I have just finished basing this little unit of Minifigs S range Bavarian gunners.  The painting was mostly carried out by someone else, I simply touched it up and and based the figures.  The gun is an 8pdr from Warrior Miniatures.

My little Bavarian force is coming on nicely, with four infantry battalions, a gun and a cavalry regiment.

  3. Good morning. I have been re-reading your blog, especially the a Warrior Miniatures Napoleonic bits, and wondered if you’ve ever done a painting guide. You get a very clean result so I’m interested in your approach. I am considering restarting my Warrior collection (I have some Austrians) and wondered about the approach. Many thanks.

    1. Hi Marc,
Thanks for your kind comments about the painting style. It is very much my own style and I have developed it over the years. I don't normally undercoat figures, but if I do I use white, grey or rust. Rarely black.

I always use gloss paints, either enamel or acrylic, and these sometimes require two coats. I do not bother with shading as I think in such a small scale it blurs the colours too much. I use very fine brushes for detail, up to 0005 size. I suppose that I try to achieve an impression of the uniform, rather than an accurate copy. At the start I rough paint using a medium brush, the jacket, trousers, musket, pack, blanket roll and hat. I then do the flesh, which is normally a mix of orange and white, after which I begin applying the detail, such as facings, hair, metal work etc.

As for Warrior figures, I enjoy painting them as they are pretty rough castings, but come alive with a bit of paint. For Austrians I would spray them using a white undercoat first, then a couple of coats of gloss white.
      Hope this helps?

  4. Thanks Bob. Yes, I have Warrior Austrians from back in the day and am oscillating around which way to go, and your blog has been a handy source of inspiration. Interesting that you use gloss paints - I was tempted to try a return to whales, but had thought Matt, plus varnish. Thanks again, much appreciated

    1. Hi again Marc, you can use a varnish, but it will go yellow after a while. I am told that water based varnishes do not yellow so quickly, but tend to be less glossy! I am afraid I uses gloss white enamel. Sometimes it is possible to paint non white figures in matt, use a gloss varnish and then, when dry, use white gloss to finish off the belts and straps etc.
