SYW Project - First of the Bigger Battalions

Having decided to increase the size of my SYW units, first off is an Austrian Line Regiment. These are very old minifigs that have been lurking in my collection for a couple of decades. I bought them not realising that the varnish had gone really yellow and so I put them away for a rainy day. However, they were of the right number to fit in with my new plans and they have received a spruce up and new bases.

They represent Austrian Regiment Nr. 50 Harsch, with their white uniforms with red facings:

I am happy with this arrangement and will organise all of my SYW infantry units along these lines.

  1. Mini Figs have always had their detractors but I like them and some of them, especially the infantry are really nice.

    1. I think you love them or hate them. They do look ugly when bare metal, but improve considerably when painted.

  2. Minifigs will always be my favourites, I think - a certain formal presence, and they paint up well (such as what I'm looking at here). The 27-figure foot units I also use for my ACW armies, and formerly did with my Napoleonics, until I made the switch to 24-figure units.

My own 18th century armies go in for 36-figure foot units (mostly): 4 companies of 8 plus HQ of 4.

    1. I am going to experiment with 24 figure infantry regiments and see how I get on. If need be I can add another 12 to each unit.

  3. Nice looking units. I like the Minifig miniatures, they are not overly detailed and enjoyable to paint.

    1. I agree with you on the ease of painting, the detail is crisp and the surface nic and smooth.

  4. There isn't a better view in the world than a good double rank of Minifigs in tricorne... lovely stuff...

    1. Steady! But they are a stirring sight. I think they will work very well using Grant's rules too.

  5. I am thinking that those very smart looking Austrians would look really good fighting the Ottoman Turks....:-)

    All the best,
