The Great Northern War

Last week when Bob Black came to visit we discussed the Great Northern War (GNW) and to my surprise Bob presented me with a number of 25/28mm figures by Ebor.  These were Swedish troops. Bob already has a sizeable Russian Army but has no opponent, so using the figures he gave me as a foundation I agreed to raise a Swedish army.

Now, what I know about the GNW would not fill a postage stamp, but I am learning fast. The armies seem to be equipped with early flintlocks but still retain a few pikemen to ward off cavalry.  The Swedes look very smart in blue with various facing colours, but a lot of yellow and buff.

I could not resist painting them in my usual gloss style and here is the result - rather spledid methinks:

A couple of days ago a package arrived from Ebor with more figures and I am sharpening my paint brush!

  1. Hello there Bob,

Lovely looking figures old chap! I have not come across Ebor - is the range complete for what you need?

    All the best,

    1. Thanks DC, yes it is a pretty comprehensive range that covers most of my needs. The figures are lovely castings and very easy to pant.

  2. What a nice gift and the start of a great project. There is another blogger who has been working through 6 units of Ebor infantry and is now close to doing similar with his cavalry. Here is a link to one of his pages if interested. http://1808534.blogspot.com/2021/08/great-northern-war-riksankedrottningens_30.html (sorry no idea how to do the clicky thing!)

    1. Thanks Norm, the link worked well. Lots of eye candy on that blog. He has done a fine job with the Ebor figures that gives me great encouragement.

  3. Very nice Bob…
Ebro figures are not a range that I would have thought to do shiny… but it works really well.

    All the best. Aly

    1. I did think about going for a matt finish, but after test painting one figure I thought gloss looked OK. I do prefer gloss on small figures as it tends to highlight the colours more. When viewed from a couple of feet away you cannot tell whether they are matt or gloss anyway!

  4. I had some 6mm GNW Russians some years back. It’s a fascinating period and the Russians and Swedes had completely different approaches which adds to the fun! Ga Pa!
