Makings of an Austrian Army

As part of my interest in Ros 25mm Napoleonics I have amassed a large number of Ros Austrian line infantry. I have around 60 of them. Ros never produced any Austrian command, artillery or cavalry, so for some time I have been pondering what to do with them. I did consider using Minifigs S Range alternatives, but collecting enough would be difficult and expensive.  My dabblings with Warrior Miniatures gave me some inspiration, so I ordered a number of sets of command figures. Here is the result; Ros Austrian line with Warrior command.:

I think they work quite well together and I am in the process of creating a small Austrian Army, with six similar battalions, some Minifigs Jagers and Warrior cavalry.

  1. Hi Bob,

I remember those Ros figures - inexpensive, basic but fine looking en masse. I wonder what happed to the moulds for them?

    All the best,

    1. I have been collecting Ros Figures for decades and have most of the series. If you want to see more google my sister blog "Ros 25mm Figures" where I have listed the range and have samples of most of the figures. I have no idea what happened to the moulds. I have written to Skytrex and Navwar, but was unable to learn any more. There are still some missing figures that I have not been able to track down.

  2. Nice looking unit. I wonder why it is that the more 'basic' figures make the more engaging, 'I wanna play with this fellas', units than the more detailed figures? I gind it so anyhow.

For mine, Minifigs strike a happy medium, and remain probably my favourites. I do have a few 'Warrior' figures, which for 3 of my Austrian units. I think they're cutem but the muskets do have a habit of falling off.

In the above pic I think the Warrior 'rank' are more compatible with the Ros 'file' than the Minifigs S-range would be. If you have any, you might find 'first generation' Minifigs a better match.

Speaking of which, I was going to 'retire' the 36 1st gen Minifigs, but never had the heart. They have been rehabilitated as front line troops in my French Army.

    1. I think S range Minifigs would work well, even better, but finding sufficient is a challenge. I have quite a few Austrians, but I do not have spares to provide commanders for my Ros chaps.

    1. I spend hours painting Old School types - probably just reliving my childhood, creating the units that I dreamt of as a boy but never had the funds or time to put together.
