Britains Deetail French Imperial Guard

On occasions I get the urge to paint something different and I find painting larger scale figures quite satisfying.  I have good number of Britains 'Deetail' figures, that even in good condition look quite ropey and, although I should imagine serious collectors shudder at the thought, I like to paint mine so that they are more presentable.

I have enough French guards (with a few repairs) to form a wargames unit; so last weekend I decided to paint them.  This is the result:

The standard bearer is a converted line infantry officer:
This scrap line infantry figure has had a new pack added, a pom pom (from a map pin) and a new arm with musket and he has been painted as a line voltigeur:

  1. They look splendid. 100 times better than the original paintjobs. I do like large scale Napoleonics.

  2. That's a big improvement, will you game with them?

    1. My plan is to slowly paint sufficient units to play out some of Neil Thomas's scenarios. It will be a while though as I only paint them when the mood takes me.

    1. Thanks for your kind comments. They are particularly well sculpted figures.

  4. Look brilliant, especially like the fact you've repainted the original fluorescent lime-green bases

  5. For me, the lime green bases are the worst aspect of these figures. On my ACW figures the base is all that I have painted and the difference is remarkable. I bought a pot of paint from Homebase for the bases that I colour matched with my wargames table.

  6. One of my friends at school used to get freebies from his Nan who painted Britains figures. Never gave me any, the cheap so-and-so! Am I the only one here who watched hundreds being blown up in Quincey's Quest in 1979?

  7. They look terrific! Do you strip the figures of their original paint or do you paint on top of it?

    1. I do not strip them down, but I do clean them up, cut off any rough bits and straighten the weapons etc.

  8. I took a look at Quincey's Quest (odd film) which is the first time that I have watched it. You are right, there are hundreds of Deetail figures being blown about - amazing.

  9. What always tickled me was Tommy Steele's subtle as a brick Waterloo-style 'why are we killing each other' whining was completely lost on my schoolmates. We thought the battle was cracking and wanted to do something similar!
