Memoir 44 Refresh

Over the last week or so, I have been working through the playing pieces that come with the updated version of Memoir '44.  I had this game but passed it on a couple of years ago, but as circumstances have changed (I am now virtually a full time carer) and my visits to the upstairs war room are reduced, I have been looking for games that can be played on the dining room table.  Memoir '44 fits the bill.

The new version has some better looking models, which are just begging to be painted, German tanks and artillery:

I have finished painting the Germans and they create quite a force.  The tanks are Panzer IVs:
The guns, I think, are 10.5cm Field Howitzer 18s:
And the infantry are all brandishing what looks like the MP40:
I have almost finished the Allies (Americans) and will post some pictures of them soon.

    1. I will take a look at the solo rules as I often play on my own. I fancy getting some of the expansions, but will wait to see if they too are upgraded.

  2. I see that the 'refreshed' game has changed the artillery pieces. The German ones shown here, 10.5cm leFH18 howitzers, are a bit of an improvement upon the PaK40s - both sides! - of the earlier version.

    1. Yes, it is nice to see proper guns. The US artillery is now US 105mm howitzers. Pictures will follow shortly.

  3. These figures look great painted up and will add to the game I would think. The tanks really look a lovely little figure.

    1. The newly detailed playing pieces are much more detailed and are nice to paint.

  4. Those new pieces do look nice (yes, they are 105mm howitzers). As I've commented on a few M44 recently fresh posts, it is just a shame they didn't overhaul the rules to bring them in line with the more modern Command and Colours games.

I usually play these sorts of games using Hexon tiles, so they have a much bigger footprint than the boards, but the boards themselves are very useful for playtesting etc. I've found that the Breakthrough card deck from the Winter War expansion gives a much better game as they generally activate more units each turn.

    1. Thanks Martin. I am sure many have already adjusted the M44 rules to their liking. I have included stuff that would be in the equipment upgrade, such as anti-tank weapons and mortars etc. Also, like you, I have played the game on hex mats, even using 1/72 scale armour and guns. The game provides a wonderful baseline to develop ideas. The other thing about M44 is that the level of command varies so much. On the one hand you have small actions like Pegasus Bridge, or there is a whole Division attacking in other scenarios. I have not tried the Breakthrough Deck, must take a look.
