Armoured Action Rules - Take 2

Having taken on board the suggestions received, I have had another go at producing a set of rules for tank battles within a single table, based upon Charles Grant's simple rules from his book "Battle". I think these may well work. This is what they look like now:
I am going to add some additional vehicles, but I think I am now ready to play test these.

  1. Bob, do you mind if I throw in a couple of performance observations, this is just my take, it is based on AP only and odes not include HE value of a shell.

The T34 76 gun is inferior to the German 75 on the Pz IV
The T34 85 gun is just a TAD superior to the German 75 on the Pz IV and inferior to both the Panther and Tiger.
Next up in value would be the German 88 with good performance
but at the top of the tree is the Panthers long 75, which out performed the 88 to say out to 4 hexes and then they would roughly match each other.
The Panthers side and rear armour is worse than the Tiger I's (and arguably the front armour a tad better - though a lot of designs have them as equals, probably to give the Tiger the status of a 'heavy' in game-play).

I hope the above does not sound pedantic or rivet counting in what is essentially meant to be a fun set of rules. Norm.

  2. Thanks Norm, some very useful comments. It will be easy to adjust the table to reflect these ideas. Mark III table coming up!!

  3. Yes, I always struggled a bit with the original strike and defence values. Grant was a bit vague about how he derived them, and they made Panthers well nigh invincible.

    1. Actually, I find it difficult understanding the rules as written in Grant's book. There is no rules summary, so you have to wade through the text to find the detail. Although it is a good read.

  4. Were these the rules for your recent Cold War bash?

    1. No, I used a different set of my own rules, which I am revising following lessons learned at Kreuzdorf Bridge. In particular I found the activation rules a bit too severe; the infantry organisation did not give sufficient anti armour capability.
