Two more new castings from Old John

In addition to the French gunners and British officer, I also received samples of a highland standard bearer and line infantry drummer in Albert shako. Both are lovely figures which turned out well with a splash of paint.

The highlanders have given me the urge to buy a whole regiment - painted as the 79th Camerons, the final highland regiment in my collection:

  2. Thanks Paskal. Painting tartans in this scale is quite difficult and I tend to go for a somewhat impressionist technique. You need patience and some good thin brushes. I tend to paint a base colour of dark blue, overlaid with a lighter green criss crossed pattern. Perhaps some black spots where the green lines cross. Then very thin lines of red, yellow or white depending upon the regiment. That gives a sort of tartan effect.

  3. You just need to go to google and search for each regiment, eg The Black watch and you should find plenty of illustrations. The Osprey series has a good number of illustrations too.

  4. My references say that the 72nd wore normal line infantry tunics up until 1881, with only Grenadier and Light companies having wings, centre companies the tufts. However, I have seen images of the 72nd in 1860 with a more highland type tunic.
